The Federal Government of Nigeria on Thursday promised to address the issues presented to them by the Academic Staff Union of Universities next week.
It was discussed in a meeting organized by the speaker of the House of Representatives.
The meeting included the union and the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Zainab.
The Minister of Finance said steps are being taken, and also assured the union that the money would be paid before the end of the coming week.
ASSU had earlier issued a three-week warning to the Nigerian government or the union would embark on a strike.
The union requested for the first part of Universities Revitalisation Fund, which Is #30billion. And the sum of #22.12billion to it’s members as earned allowances.
A re-negotiation of the 2009 agreement between the union and Federal Government was also mentioned at the meeting by the union.
Responding to it, Zainab made it known that actions are being taken for the commencement of the re-negotiation. She also addressed the issue of University Transparency Accountability Solutions (UTAS) raised in the meeting.
GBajabiamila said:
“We cannot sit here as leaders and watch things fall apart; education is very important and no amount of money put into it is too much”.
He laid emphasis on settling the issue once and for all. He also said strike is not a tool to be used all the time knowing how important education is.
The President of the union who still insisted on the three weeks ultimatum promised to convey all that was discussed to the union and give a feedback to the speaker on the union’s decision.
