The spokesperson for the president, Femi Adesina, claims that former president Olusegun Obasanjo has praised President Muhammadu Buhari for his policy of redesigning the naira.
In a statement, Adesina said that the former president praised Buhari at the February 10 council of state meeting in Abuja’s state house.
He cited Obasanjo as saying, “Change was necessary from time to time, and resistance to change is normal.”
The policy, according to the former president, would “have a salutary effect on kidnapping and ransom taking, and corruption will be substantially reduced” and “a little bit of sanity into our elections.”
The naira change policy is good, but it needs to be put into practice. If there isn’t enough, let’s have more. Let’s deal with any dishonest individuals who are sabotaging the policy, Obasanjo stated.
I’ve been through at least a half-dozen currency exchanges. The “Ali Must Go” riots occurred when we increased feeding in universities from 50 kobos to N1. People will always support, oppose, or be neutral in their opposition to change.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele, stated that the policy aims to improve Nigeria’s economic prospects.
He stated, “The policy is not targeted at anyone or any group of people; rather, it is derived from the analysis to strengthen our macroeconomic fundamentals and improve our socio-economic conditions.”
“To reduce corruption, increase financial inclusion, support security agencies in their fight against banditry and ransom-taking, and increase the efficacy of monetary policy.”
