An unspecified number of students and visitors at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) Ago-Iwoye, in ljebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State, escaped death on Tuesday when a moving vehicle crashed into a tree and caught fire.
The vehicle, a Toyota Venza car, was plying the intra University road at the permanent site of the institution when the incident happened.
The car, driven by a student of the University, skidded off the road before crashing into a tree and bursted into flames.
The incident, which occurred around 1pm, threw lecturers, students and visitors going to and from the university into panic mood, forcing everyone to run helter-skelter for safety.
Our correspondent Hotgbedu, who witnessed the incident, observed that the terrifying impact of the crash triggered a huge explosion, which later resulted in an inferno that consumed the white-coloured Toyota Venza.
All efforts to get the University’s Director of Public Relations, Niyi Oduwole, for a reaction proved abortive, as he was said to have been busy with preparations for the university’s 107th Inaugural Lecture scheduled to hold at 2pm on Tuesday.
The lecture is to be delivered by a Professor of Language Education, Prof. Sefiu Oladunjoye.
