It is an offence for any policeman to be on duty and not in uniform in any part of the country.
This was the declaration by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
The IGP’s declaration was made known at the weekend by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
Adejobi’s statement was on the heels of a recent video where some officers accosted a motorists in Lagos without their uniforms on.
The motorist, who claimed to be a journalist with the Naija FM, resisted being ordered to come down from his car because the men who claimed to be policemen were not in uniform.
They were later identified in the video as policemen attached to Zone 2 Police command in Lagos.
According to the police, the officers are currently being punished for their actions.
In his statement, Adejobi saif, “IGP has directed that all policemen on routine patrol and stop and search must be in uniform. On no account should any policeman be on the road in mufti.
“It’s a tradition in the police that every policeman must be identified. No unknown police. Every policeman is known and traceable.”
