Nigeria’s leading telecommunications company, MTN, has closed all its stores and service centres across the country.
The development follows a wave of outrage from subscribers who had their lines barred on Sunday due to a mismatch in their National Identification Number and SIM registration.
Videos on social media showed a mob destroying an MTN office in the FESTAC Town area of Lagos State, with angry subscribers vandalizing the property.
In other locations, there were also protests reported as subscribers pushed to resolve the problems.
In response to the backlash, MTN announced on Tuesday that it would be shutting down its shops nationwide. “Yello customer, please be informed that our shops nationwide will be closed today, 30th July 2024,” the company stated.
