The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has completed a doctorate in Islamic law at the University of London, United Kingdom.
In an emotional video, Sanusi is seen visibly moved after receiving news that his thesis had been approved.
The video captures the monarch being congratulated during a virtual meeting. His thesis, titled “Codification of Islamic Family Law as an Instrument of Social Reform: A Case Study of the Emirate of Kano and Comparison with the Kingdom of Morocco,” received approval without any corrections.
The former Central Bank of Nigeria governor began the Ph.D. program after being deposed by then-Kano governor Abdullahi Ganduje in 2020, subsequently relocating to the UK to concentrate on his studies.
Five months after his dethronement, Sanusi was awarded a visiting fellowship at the African Studies Centre of the University of Oxford.
Earlier in 2019, Mr Sanusi was awarded an honorary doctorate in finance at the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London.
The monarch had, in 1997, earned a second bachelor’s degree in Islamic studies and fiqh at the Africa International University in Khartoum, Sudan.
He earned his first degree in Economics from Ahmadu Bello University in 1981 and returned to the university after his mandatory National Youth Service to complete a Master’s degree in Economics. Between 1983 and 1985, he taught Economics at the university before transitioning to a career in banking, which led to his appointment as Central Bank of Nigeria governor in 2009.
