Following the protest by members of the House of Representatives over the conferment of the Commander of the Federal Republic( CFR) on the speaker and the deputy senate president, Nigeria’s president Bola Tinubu has redressed their grievances.
Recall that the president had conferred the CFR on both National Assembly leaders in commemoration of the 64th Independence Day celebration.
Members of the House in defence of the leaders said the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas deserved to be conferred the nation’s second highest national honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger.
Reacting to this, the special adviser to the president on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said Tinubu was persuaded by the position of the members of the House of Representatives.
Describing the incident as a historical error and an oversight, Onanuga said the president has decided to remedy the situation.
His words, “Thus, he has decided to upgrade the Speaker to GCON from CFR, in accordance with the National Order of Precedence.
“The speaker, the Senate President, other principal officers of the National Assembly and the Chief Justice of Nigeria will be formally decorated with their new honours later,” Onanuga stated in a statement.
