Covenant University (CU), a private institution, has been named Nigeria’s top university in the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) Rankings.
The annual THE Rankings, which is one of the most comprehensive and influential global assessments of universities, analyzed data from 1,907 universities across 108 countries and regions for 2024.
The rankings are based on 18 indicators that measure an institution’s performance in areas such as teaching quality, research environment, research impact, industry collaboration, and international perspective.
Covenant University secured its top spot among Nigerian universities, scoring high in teaching and research.
Following CU is the University of Ibadan (UI), while the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), University of Lagos (UNILAG), and Bayero University, Kano complete the top five.
On a global scale, Covenant University ranks within the 800-1000 range, sharing this position with the University of Ibadan as Nigeria’s highest-ranked institutions in the global list.
The University of Oxford in the UK tops the 2024 global rankings for the ninth consecutive year, marking the longest reign in THE Rankings history, surpassing Harvard University’s previous eight-year stretch.
Stanford University in the US moved up to second place, pushing Harvard University down to fourth, while the UK’s University of Cambridge fell to fifth after being in joint third place the previous year.
THE’s analysis involved more than 134 million citations from 16.5 million research publications, with survey responses from over 68,000 scholars worldwide.
