Prince Dapo Abiodun, the governor of Ogun State, has approved the payment of N77,000 as the state’s minimum wage for the lowest-paid workers, and it takes effect immediately.
This choice was uncovered after a gathering of the State Government drove by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, and the initiative of the Coordinated Work in Ogun State, containing the Nigeria Work Congress (NLC), Worker’s organization Congress (TUC), and the Joint Arranging Committee (JNC), to examine the execution of the new the lowest pay permitted by law.
According to Talabi, the meeting was called by Governor Abiodun, who, according to him, has ordered that no state employee should earn less than N77,000 beginning in October.
He said that Prince Abiodun cares about the people of the state and has taken proactive steps to alleviate their suffering. He added that the Governor has also told the organized private sector to follow the policy because their employees aren’t immune to the country’s economic realities in order to improve the state’s overall living standards.
The SSG also said that the Governor has told the private sector to talk to their relevant stakeholders about setting a fair minimum wage, and that he will set up a monitoring team to see how the private sector implements it to make sure no one is left out.
Comrade Hameed Benco, the State NLC Chairman, stated that organized labor in the state is pleased that the Governor approved the N77,000, which is currently the highest in the country, after consulting with labor leaders.
Benco said that the other sectorial salaries will be affected in the same way because some states that have implemented the new minimum wage pay N70,000, while others pay N70,250 or less.
He also mentioned that the government has graciously accepted the laborers’ request to not tax the new basic salary.
In a similar vein, Comrade Akeem Lasisi of the TUC and his counterpart from the JNC, Comrade Isa Olude, praised the government for being accommodating to workers while noting that consequential adjustments for pensioners and other matters will be announced following thorough consultation with the relevant stakeholders.
Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, Head of Service for Ogun State, stated in his response that the approval of the generous minimum wage for workers demonstrates the Governor’s responsiveness and sensitivity to the plight of the workers and the general population of the state.
Onasanya expressed optimism that the government’s actions will encourage workers to stick with the government’s policies and increase morale.
