The Senate on Tuesday has confirmed the appointment of Sylvester N. Nwakuche as the new Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS).
The confirmation followed the submission of a report by the Senate Committee on Interior, chaired by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, which screened Nwakuche on March 12, 2025.
Oshiomhole reported that the committee found no petitions or adverse reports against Nwakuche, noting his qualifications, competence, and integrity. He stated that the nominee demonstrated intelligence and the capacity to lead the correctional service.
Nwakuche informed the Senate that the number of prisoners on death row had increased from 3,590 in September 2024 to 3,688 in March 2025, representing a 2.73 percent rise. He identified the challenge of inmates awaiting trial and called for improved collaboration with law enforcement agencies to accelerate the judicial process.

He further criticized state governors for their reluctance to execute inmates on death row or commute sentences to life imprisonment, contributing to overcrowding in correctional facilities.
Nwakuche proposed stronger partnerships with the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services (DSS), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) to enhance justice delivery.
With unanimous approval, the Senate confirmed Nwakuche’s appointment, entrusting him with the leadership of the NCoS in addressing the service’s pressing challenges.
