The Nigerian Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, has called for an extension of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) service year from one year to two.
During a meeting with the newly appointed Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, on Friday in Abuja, the minister discussed several key issues affecting the program and praised its recent advancements.
Dr. Alausa acknowledged the NYSC’s successful digitalization efforts, which have played a crucial role in combating certificate racketeering, especially involving foreign-trained graduates across West Africa.
He commended the scheme for its innovation and urged further improvements.
Addressing the ongoing issue of National Diploma (ND) part-time graduates with Higher National Diplomas (HND) who were previously exempted from National Service, the minister emphasized the need for inclusivity and better integration of these graduates into the NYSC framework.
He proposed that the NYSC service duration be extended to two years to allow for a more comprehensive skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development program for corps members.
“You have done so well as an organization. Let NYSC provide even more opportunities for young Nigerians to become job creators and contribute to the nation’s needs,” Dr. Alausa stated.
Brigadier General Nafiu, on his part, praised the Minister for his innovative approach and the progress made in the education sector.
He also suggested the creation of a database to track Nigerian youths studying abroad for degree programs, which could further enhance the NYSC’s coordination efforts.
