Igede-Ekiti, one of the ancient and historic towns in Yorubaland, Ekiti State, has etched its name into the history books as its traditional ruler, His Royal Majesty Oba James Adelusi Aladesuru II, becomes Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarch, having spent an incredible 66 years on the throne.
Oba Aladesuru II ascended the throne in 1959 at the age of 26, and today, at 92 years old, he remains a symbol of stability, tradition, and wisdom in the community. His reign spans over six decades of cultural preservation, leadership, and dedication to his people.
Igede-Ekiti traces its origins to the ancient city of Ile-Ife, the cradle of the Yoruba people. The town’s deep cultural roots have been further strengthened under the Oba’s longstanding leadership.
Closely behind him is the revered Awujale of Ijebuland, who has reigned for 65 years since 1960 — making Oba Aladesuru’s tenure the longest in Nigeria’s monarchical history.
When asked about the secret to his long life and reign, the Onigede humbly replied,
“God is my secret of longevity.”
His story is not only one of longevity but also of service, spiritual grace, and a lasting legacy that continues to inspire the people of Igede-Ekiti and beyond.
