The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State has called on former Governor Ayodele Fayose to leave the party rather than publicly ridicule it.
Recall that during a recent appearance on Channels Television, Fayose stated that the PDP in Ekiti and across Nigeria is “dead” and has lost its essence, claiming it would never win any future elections.
In response, the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the party in the state, Dare Adeleke, condemned Fayose’s comments in a statement on Saturday. He accused the former governor of repeatedly betraying the party that enabled him to serve two terms as governor.
Adeleke asserted that Fayose’s actions in recent years, particularly his ongoing endorsement of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government in Ekiti, constitute acts of betrayal that the party will no longer tolerate.
He alleged that Fayose’s motivation for his betrayal stemmed from his unsuccessful attempts to gain control over the PDP structure in Ekiti, which were resisted by party members and leaders.
Adeleke argued that Fayose has lost political relevance in the state, making it difficult for party officials and leaders to align with him in undermining the PDP.
He questioned, “Why has Fayose refused to leave the same party he has described as a ‘carcass’ and a ‘dead entity’?”
Adeleke continued, “He has admitted to being a bitter, disgruntled man who betrayed his own party simply because he didn’t get what he wanted. Like a soldier who sells secrets to the enemy and complains about not getting promoted, Fayose wants rewards from the very party he undermines. He confessed on air that he supported Tinubu simply because he considers him a friend and kinsman, as if Nigeria operates on tribal sentiment rather than merit.”
He further stated, “Fayose sought control over two local government executives but was rightly denied. If he were truly as politically influential as he claims, he would have moved the PDP structure in Ekiti to the APC or ADC. Yet, not one ward or local government area chairman has followed him.”
Adeleke expressed optimism that the PDP would win the governorship election in Ekiti State next year, affirming, “Let it be known, the PDP will win Ekiti State, and I am emphatic about this.”
When contacted by Sunday Tribune, Fayose dismissed Adeleke’s statement, labeling him as inconsequential within the PDP.
Fayose responded, “I can’t respond to him. Who is Dare Adeleke? In what capacity is he speaking? He is too insignificant to address me. I don’t reply to rats and cockroaches in my house. What is he talking about?”
