A tragedy occurred in Ovia, Edo State, on Thursday when a Dangote truck reportedly lost control and rammed into a group of market women, leaving several victims feared dead.
The incident, which was shared on X and has since gone viral on social media, has drawn widespread condemnation and renewed concerns over recurring accidents involving heavy-duty trucks on Nigerian roads.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the truck suffered brake failure before plowing into the market area, causing severe casualties and destruction.
Local residents expressed shock and anger, stressing that such accidents have become far too common, often with devastating consequences for traders and commuters.
The viral video of the Ovia crash triggered calls for accountability from both the Dangote Group and government authorities.
Many Nigerians urged stricter safety measures, better regulation of haulage vehicles, and swift justice for victims, insisting that decisive steps must be taken to prevent avoidable tragedies of this scale.
In a related incident, another Dangote-branded truck was involved in a fatal accident along the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway on Wednesday, reportedly killing several people.
However, Dangote Industries Limited swiftly issued a statement distancing itself from the vehicle, clarifying that the truck belonged to a third-party company, Visco Investment Global Limited, and not the conglomerate.
Meanwhile, citizens continue to demand stronger road safety enforcement to curb the growing spate of deadly truck accidents across the country.
