Tinubu
Prominent social media commentator, Nefertiti, has accused Bola Ahmed Tinubu of favouring Yoruba appointees in key positions allocated to the North Central region of the country.
Nefertiti made the claim in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, alleging that recent appointments by Tinubu show a pattern in which major federal offices from the region are held by Yorubas from Kwara and Kogi States.
In her words: “A Yoruba from Kwara as GMD NNPCL. A Yoruba from Kogi as INEC Chairman. A Yoruba from Kogi as CG of the Fire Service. Yoruba from Kwara as AGF and Justice Minister. All are from the North Central.”
The post has since generated widespread reactions online, with users scrutinising the ethnic and regional background of some of Tinubu’s most recent appointees.
Among those listed are Bayo Bashir Ojulari, Group Managing Director of NNPCL, who hails from Kwara State; Chief Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi (SAN), Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, also from Kwara State; Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), Chairman of INEC, from Kogi State; and Olumode Samuel Adeyemi, Comptroller General of the Federal Fire Service, likewise from Kogi State.
While all four appointees represent states within the North Central geopolitical zone, critics argue that the ethnic concentration of Yorubas in those positions reflects a deeper bias in Tinubu’s pattern of governance.
User @UchennaEkechuk2 expanded on the argument, alleging that Tinubu has “handed over all critical appointments zoned to the North Central to his Yoruba kits and kin,” describing the move as “sectional and deliberate.”
Another commentator, @nubiudodo, struck a lighter tone, writing:
“Maybe Yoruba is the only tribe in North Central, or North Central has only Kwara and Kogi States! Please somebori should konfam this informate for us o!”
The discussion has sparked a broader debate on social media about federal character, ethnic inclusion, and the representation of minority groups in national leadership.
As of press time, the Presidency has yet to respond to the claims. But political observers warn that the perception of ethnic clustering could further fuel public distrust if the administration fails to address concerns of inclusivity in its appointments.
