A former Director of Defence Intelligence, Commodore Kunle Olawunmi (rtd), has accused the Federal Government of knowing those who sponsor terrorism in Nigeria but lacking the political courage to bring them to justice.
Speaking in a recent interview, Olawunmi alleged that despite having detailed intelligence on the financiers of insurgency and banditry, successive governments have chosen to look the other way. He lamented that the refusal to prosecute high-profile terror sponsors has continued to embolden criminal networks across the country.
According to him, Nigeria’s approach to counterterrorism has been weak and inconsistent, focusing mainly on military operations while ignoring the financial and political structures that sustain terrorism. He described it as “an aberration” that the government prefers to negotiate with terrorists rather than treat them as enemies of the state.
“It is an abnormality for a government to negotiate with terrorists. The sponsors are known, but those in power lack the will to go after them,” Olawunmi stated.
He questioned why some militant groups in Nigeria are quickly branded terrorists, while others—despite carrying out worse atrocities—are treated with leniency or engaged in peace talks.
The retired military officer stressed that no country can defeat terrorism without tackling its financiers and political backers. He warned that the continued protection of these sponsors undermines national security and weakens the morale of security operatives who risk their lives in the field.
Olawunmi further urged the government to show leadership and transparency in its anti-terrorism efforts, insisting that the time has come for those aiding or funding terrorists to face justice, no matter their political or religious influence.
