Nigerians have expressed outrage over the silence of prominent pastors and General Overseers on the recent killings of Christians across the country.
The backlash erupted after X user Pharaoh (@MrMekzy_) questioned why prominent Christian leaders have remained quiet while only Reverend Ezekiel Dachomo continues to speak out on the killings.
“Wait, why haven’t other big pastors and G.Os come out to talk about the Christian genocide in Nigeria? Why’s Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo the only one I’ve seen talking about it?” he wrote.
His post quickly ignited a heated debate online, with many users accusing church leaders of being politically compromised and tied to influential politicians, particularly those in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
User @Xperience_Snr wrote, “Most of the pastors are generally connected to the politicians. We see it every election period how the politicians go to their altars to seek winning prayers, do donations, and side campaign. When you eat with the devil, how can you come out again to talk bad about the devil and its works?”
He also singled out Pastor Jerry Eze and Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, accusing them of hypocrisy. “Pastor Jerry Eze connects to over 20,000 worshippers across Nigeria and overseas, yet he can’t use his platform to speak about this for even 20 minutes. Pastor Chris set up interviews during Covid to convince us that 5G caused the virus, but now, he’s silent.”
Other users echoed similar sentiments. @BugieKay said, “Because they are deep in the pockets of politicians who use their churches to campaign during elections. How dare you speak against your paymaster? Ninety percent of Nigerian pastors are just hustlers.”
Another user, @AjeboDanny, added, “It doesn’t fit their prosperity lies,” while @felixherbt noted, “We’re talking genocide, not prosperity and tithes.”
Some Nigerians linked the silence to government influence, suggesting that powerful religious figures had been instructed to stay quiet. @MaziAwkaetiti wrote, “Abuja has given them instruction. You watch the pattern and you know what’s going on.”
Another user, @KLASSIQTUNEZ, claimed, “These pastors don’t pay taxes that’s the bribe for having a Muslim-Muslim ticket and not speaking up against atrocities.”
The reactions come amid reports of escalating Christian persecution in northern Nigeria, where thousands have been killed or displaced by armed groups since Bola Tinubu assumed office.
Critics suggested that the government has failed to act decisively, while religious leaders who command massive followings remain silent.
