The Oluomo of Ijebu-Igbo, Alhaji Chief Ismail Lawal Abinugbola has clarified that there is no ban on carnivals in the town, following widespread concerns and reactions from youths over alleged festive restrictions.
All the information contained in this report was gathered from a conversation shared online by Mr. Adeyemi O. M, a concerned youth of Ijebu-Igbo, following his engagement with the Oluomo of Ijebu-Igbo, Alhaji Chief Ismail Lawal Abinugbola.
According to the Oluomo, Alhaji Chief Abinugbola the clarification followed a security briefing which revealed ongoing security threats around Ijebu-Igbo and neighboring areas, particularly along the Osun axis, where reports of armed bandit movements have been received by security agencies. These concerns, he explained, informed the need for caution regarding night gatherings during the festive period.
He further explained that the decision reached at the last stakeholders’ meeting did not prohibit carnivals, but rather stipulated that any group or quarter planning a carnival must first obtain approval from the Kabiyesi’s and thereafter secure police clearance to ensure adequate security arrangements.
Emphasizing the importance of due process, the Oluomo noted that Ijebu-Igbo now operates under a constituted traditional authority, making adherence to established procedures necessary for peaceful coexistence and public safety.
He advised youths and carnival organizers to engage constructively by approaching the King for approval, presenting such approval to the police for clearance, and celebrating responsibly with security consciousness.
While acknowledging youths’ concerns over perceived restrictions and their impact on social life and economic activities, the Oluomo maintained that the safety of lives and property remains paramount, urging all parties to embrace dialogue, unity, and order as the community celebrates the festive season.
