A tragic incident unfolded on the evening of Wednesday late night, December 31, 2025, new year eve at Obada Market, Obada Station in Ijebu Igbo, when a motorcycle belong to Mallam Yusuf Adekunle was completely burnt following sparks from explosive bangers shortly after Ishaa prayers.
The incident occurred at the Hausa Mosque located beneath the Klass Building (at the back of Obada Market), a place where worshippers regularly observe Salatul-Maghrib and Salatul-Ishaa. On this particular evening, the victim had parked his motorcycle at the usual and designated spot near Brother Abo’s Egg Base shop before proceeding to observe Ishaa prayers.
Shortly after the conclusion of the prayer, the environment suddenly became unsafe as repeated loud explosions and flying sparks from bangers erupted within the market area. The intensity of the explosions caused panic, preventing worshippers and traders from moving freely.
Out of concern for safety, the motorcycle owner and several others sought refuge inside Brother Abo’s shop. Attempts were made on more than two occasions to return to the parked motorcycle, but each effort was halted by the continuous sparks and explosive sounds from the bangers.
Moments later, chaos ensued as it was discovered that the motorcycle had caught fire. Due to the confusion and danger at the scene, the exact direction or source of the banger that ignited the fire could not be determined.
Efforts by good-hearted individuals, including CashMan and other nearby brothers, to extinguish the fire proved unsuccessful. Within a short time, the motorcycle was completely consumed by the flames.
Overwhelmed by shock and helplessness, the owner could only walk away from the scene in silence and tears.
“I honestly could not explain how it happened or where the banger came from. All I know is that my only means of transportation was gone in minutes,” he lamented.
The loss is particularly devastating as school resumption is imminent, and the motorcycle served as the owner’s sole means of daily transportation. Beyond the material damage, the incident has raised serious concerns about public safety, especially the indiscriminate use of explosive bangers in crowded commercial and religious areas.
As the Yoruba adage says, “Bẹ́yìí ò ṣe! Ẹ̀dá ń ronu, Ọlọ́run ń rò tìẹ̀” — humans plan, but God has His own design.
Residents and worshippers are now calling on relevant authorities and community leaders to urgently address the reckless use of bangers in public spaces to prevent further loss of lives and property.
