Some princes from Oyo Town have taken legal action against the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, at the State High Court in Oyo Town.
The case, filed under Suit No: HOY/18/2026, was brought by Ladigbolu Adegboyega, Owoade Tesleem, Adeyemi Adesina, and Adeyemi Adebayo. In their suit, the princes asked the court to stop the Alaafin from attending events or functions they believe are not suitable for someone who holds such an important traditional position in Yorubaland.
They also requested a court order to prevent the Alaafin from acting in any way that would make him appear subordinate or inferior to any other Oba in Yorubaland.
In addition, the claimants asked the court to declare that the stool of the Alaafin of Oyo is highly respected and historically important, not only in Yorubaland but also in Nigeria and beyond.
According to the court documents, they want it clearly stated that the Alaafin is a symbol of unity and the custodian of Yoruba culture and tradition. They also asked the court to affirm that the Alaafin is the paramount ruler in Oyo Town and has authority over chieftaincy matters in Oyo North and Oyo South.
The court documents state that the defendant may appear in person or be represented by a lawyer. The necessary forms are to be submitted at the High Court registry in the judicial division where the case was filed.
The matter is expected to proceed in court in line with due legal process.
