President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed that the new cashless payment system at Nigerian airports be suspended.
The Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, announced the President’s decision after a Federal Executive Council meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday, March 4.
According to the minister, the President instructed him to stop the current system and review it properly to create a better one that will not cause difficulties for Nigerians.
For now, a hybrid system will be used. This means:
• Passengers who already have payment cards can continue to use them.
• Those who prefer to pay with cash will also be allowed to do so.
The minister also said the government may involve private companies to help design a more effective and stress-free cashless system.
The cashless payment method was introduced this week by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) at Lagos and Abuja airports, but it caused long queues and delays for travelers.
