An official of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Abeokuta South Local Government, Abbas Olalekan, has been taken to court over the death of a corps member, Victoria Ariyo.
Olalekan, who works as a Local Government Inspector (LGI), was arraigned before a magistrate court in Isabo after his arrest. The case is linked to the death of Ariyo, who reportedly died from complications related to pregnancy.
According to sources, the official was allegedly in a relationship with the deceased, which led to a pregnancy. The situation reportedly resulted in an attempt to terminate the pregnancy, which later caused her death.
The 43-year-old defendant appeared before Magistrate A.K. Araba on a two-count charge of conspiracy and attempt to procure abortion. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
His lawyer applied for bail, stating that the offences are bailable. The court granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties. One of the sureties must be a family member, while the other must be employed. They are also required to provide necessary documents, including proof of tax payment.
However, the court ordered that Olalekan be remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre until he meets the bail conditions.
The case has been adjourned till April 14 for further hearing.
