A political gathering in Abeokuta turned tragic after violence broke out during an APC consensus endorsement event held at Ake.
The event, organised to show support for Senator Adeola Solomon Yayi as the party’s consensus candidate, was disrupted by a clash that led to the death of some men identified simply as Stone and Bayo.
According to eyewitnesses, the trouble started when Stone had a verbal confrontation with another attendee, name withheld, who is reportedly linked to a confraternity group. Witnesses said the argument quickly escalated after name withheld allegedly shouted a phrase associated with the group, which increased tension at the venue.
Shortly after, chaos broke out as some individuals believed to be Name withheld associates began throwing stones and bayo bottles. In the confusion, one person reportedly pulled out a gun and shot Stone.
He was said to have died from the gunshot, leaving attendees in shock and panic.
After Stone was confirmed dead, while Bayo was rushed to the hospital and initially placed on treatment after sustaining injuries from the attack. However, later in evening that he also succumbed to the injuries and passed away.

Security agencies have since launched an investigation into the incident. Authorities say efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about safety at political gatherings and the influence of violent groups. Residents and observers have called on the Ogun State Government and security agencies to take firm action to prevent similar occurrences.
Officials are yet to release a full statement, but sources say measures may be strengthened to improve security at future public events.
The tragic incident has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a peaceful political gathering.
