The ceremony took place at the Chief Abayomi Adeyemi Auditorium, Polytechnic Main Campus, Ijebu-Igbo, beginning at 10:00am, with Ogun State Governor, Prince (Dr) Dapo Abiodun, listed as the Special Guest of Honour.
The Rector of the institution, Engr Dr. Mobolaji Onasanya, described the dual celebration as a significant milestone in the Polytechnic’s history, providing an opportunity to celebrate academic achievements, recognise the contributions of stakeholders and reflect on two decades of technical and vocational education.
According to the Rector, the celebration is also an opportunity to assess the institution’s progress, acknowledge the efforts of those who have contributed to its development and outline its aspirations for the future.
The week-long programme commenced with a Jumat service on Friday, October 9, followed by an interdenominational church service on Sunday, October 11. Other activities included a rally and press conference on Monday, October 12, an exhibition on Tuesday, October 13, and a dinner and awards night on Wednesday, October 14.
The ceremony program culminate with the 4th Combined Convocation Ceremony and 20th anniversary celebration.
Onasanya said the event also recognise the contributions of the Polytechnic’s founders, successive Governing Councils and management teams, staff, students, parents and guardians, alumni, government, regulatory bodies, the host community and development partners.
He noted that the institution had continued to strengthen its capacity to provide practical, industry-relevant technical and vocational education over the past two decades.
The Rector highlighted improvements in infrastructure, academic programmes, staff welfare, student support, digital services and institutional administration under the current management, while acknowledging that more work remained to be done.
Among the facilities expected to be commissioned during the anniversary celebration are the completed School of Environmental Technology building, Twin Science Laboratory and Engineering Laboratories.
The event also feature the sod-turning ceremony for the proposed School of Communications Complex, reflecting the institution’s commitment to expanding its facilities to support teaching and learning.
Despite these achievements, Onasanya identified inadequate infrastructure as one of the major challenges facing the Polytechnic.
He explained that the institution’s available lecture rooms, laboratories, workshops, staff offices, student hostels and other essential facilities were insufficient to meet the demands of its expanding programmes and student population.
The Rector also highlighted the logistical and academic challenges associated with the use of the Abusi Edumare Campus, which he described as essentially a secondary-school facility.
He said the institution’s long-term goal was to develop the main campus to accommodate all students in an environment specifically designed for higher technical and vocational education, adding that achieving this would require sustained investment and collaboration with the government and development partners.
Dr. Onasanya further appealed for the provision of a properly equipped ambulance for the Polytechnic’s Health Centre to strengthen emergency medical response.
He also called for the rehabilitation of sections of the road network leading to the institution to improve accessibility, safety and movement for students, staff and visitors.
Another major concern raised by the Rector was the Polytechnic’s reported lack of access to Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) intervention since 2020.
He appealed for a practical and equitable rotational arrangement for infrastructure support among state-owned tertiary institutions to ensure that their critical needs received fair consideration.
The Rector also called on the Ogun State Government to review the institution’s monthly subvention, noting that the allocation had remained substantially at its previous level despite rising costs of salaries, utilities, maintenance, equipment and other essential operations.
According to him, an upward review would help the institution meet its financial obligations, maintain essential services and sustain improvements in teaching, learning and administration.
He stressed that the requests were intended to consolidate the institution’s achievements and strengthen its ability to fulfil its educational mandate.
Dr. Onasanya reaffirmed the Polytechnic’s commitment to prudent management, accountability and the responsible use of available resources.
He expressed appreciation to Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, who is also the special to the institution, for his support for education and institutional development.
He also acknowledged the Chairperson of the Governing Council, Alhaja Salimot Makanjuola Badru, and other council members, alongside staff, students, traditional rulers, the host community, alumni, parents, guardians, regulatory bodies and development partners.
The Rector equally recognised the media’s role in informing the public, documenting institutional progress and drawing attention to issues requiring constructive engagement.
As the institution marks its 20th anniversary, Onasanya said its commitment remained focused on providing practical, industry-relevant education, promoting skills acquisition and entrepreneurship, strengthening digital responsiveness and producing graduates capable of contributing meaningfully to Ogun State, Nigeria and the wider world.
The combined convocation and anniversary celebration therefore marks both a milestone in the Polytechnic’s history and an opportunity to renew its commitment to academic excellence, skills development and institutional growth.
