Nigeria activist, Aisha Yesufu has said that a military coup is the worst thing that can happen to any nation.

Yesufu stated this amidst the crisis in the Niger Republic.

Recalls that soldiers in the West African country of Niger had announced a coup on national TV.

They said they had dissolved the constitution, suspended all institutions and closed the nation’s borders.

Niger’s President, Mohamed Bazoum has been held by troops from the presidential guard since early on Wednesday.

However, Bazoum was promised unwavering support from the United States in a call from from US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken.

United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres also offered the organisation’s full support to the uranium-rich country.

Bazoum is a key Western ally in the fight against Islamist militancy in West Africa.

Two neighbouring countries, Mali and Burkina Faso, have experienced coups triggered by jihadist uprisings in recent years.

Sharing her thoughts on military coups, Yesufu stated that Nigeria was at its worst during the military era.

Speaking via Twitter, she wrote, “Military coup is the worst thing that can happen to any Nation.

“Nigeria was at its worst during the military era. Do not allow anvone to romanticize the horror of civilians being looked upon as less than human and treated as such.”
