Super Eagles goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, has issued a heartfelt apology to Nigerian supporters following the team’s defeat in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final against Ivory Coast.
Despite leading for most of the game, Nigeria surrendered their one-goal lead to the host nation, resulting in a thrilling but ultimately disappointing end to the tournament.
Nwabali expressed the team’s acceptance of full responsibility for the loss and acknowledged the frustration it brought.
In a post on his Instagram handle, he stated, “A disappointing and frustrating end. I deeply apologize to Nigerians. I was once a fan, still a fan, and I understand how it feels to give you a disappointing night.”
The goalkeeper continued, “We take full responsibility. Thanks for the whole support till the end. I love you all.”
Nigeria’s defeat in the AFCON final left fans disappointed, as many thought they would bring back the cup to Abuja, the country’s capital.
