Two female students of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ogun state have been robbed and raped.
Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson of the Ogun police command, it was gathered that the incident occurred at around 10 pm on Monday.
She said the matter was reported to the Igbeba Division of the Ogun state police command and the victims have been hospitalised.
Odutola said the robbers invaded an off-campus apartment where the victims (names withheld) resided by tearing down a netted window.
“The victims were robbed of their phones and an undisclosed amount through a POS transaction at gunpoint,” she said.
“Thereafter, the robbers took the girls to an uncompleted building opposite their home where they took turns to rape them.
“Once the ladies are discharged from the hospital, they will be questioned and further investigation will begin to arrest the culprits.”
Earlier this month, a group of cultists had disrupted an exam at TASUED to lynch a final-year student.
Odutola said the state’s police also recently handled some harassment-related cases emanating from TASUED’s host community.
She said the command is looking to engage with the vice-chancellor of TASUED to address recurring security threats affecting the school.
“Most of TASUED’s students live outside the school because the university lacks a hostel. And some of the indigenes in the host community are hostile. This is not the first time this is happening in the school,” she said.
“We had earlier arrested some set of suspects who had been involved in similar acts.
“We will be engaging with the VC to address the security threats affecting the university.”
The developments of recent weeks have increasingly raised concerns about security across tertiary institution campuses in Nigeria and their host communities.
