The House of Representatives has initiated a bill proposing the establishment of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages, sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and eight others.
This institution aims to promote Nigerian language learning and cultural development.
The university’s primary objective is to advance learning, providing higher education opportunities in Nigerian languages and cultures to individuals from diverse backgrounds.
By establishing this university, Nigeria seeks to produce socially mature individuals capable of communicating, understanding and utilizing Nigerian languages for national growth.
Upon establishment, the university will develop and offer academic and professional programs leading to diplomas, degrees and postgraduate research programs.
These programs will emphasize planning, adaptive, developmental and productive skills in Nigerian languages and cultures.
The President will serve as the university’s visitor, conducting regular visits to oversee its affairs.
The President also holds authority to remove council members, except the pro-chancellor and vice-chancellor, due to misconduct or inability to perform duties.
The bill is expected to undergo a second reading and public hearing to gather stakeholders’ input, paving the way for a significant advancement in Nigerian language education and cultural preservation.
