Unfortunately, abandoning newborns in public places and dumpsites has become a recurring issue in Nigeria. A disturbing incident in 2022 highlighted this trend, where a baby girl, unable to speak or walk, was callously abandoned in front of a shop on Tajudeen Bello Street, Giwa Oke-Aro Road, Ogun State, by her own parents.
The baby girl, rescued by the Agbado Division police, remains in a precarious situation after being rejected by multiple orphanages. Currently, she is being held in police custody, awaiting a more permanent solution.
In a disturbing incident earlier this year, a 30-year-old mother, Olubunmi Ajayi, was arrested for attempting to drown her five-month-old baby, Imole Anifowose, in a river in Sagamu, Ogun State. This shocking event highlights the desperate situations some mothers face, leading them to consider extreme actions.
A heroic bystander, Olusola Sonaya, intervened just in time to rescue a five-month-old baby, Imole Anifowose, after her mother, Olubunmi Ajayi, threw her into the Remo Secondary School river in Sagamu, Ogun State.
