Veteran Afrobeats star D’banj has revealed plans for a highly anticipated joint tour with fellow Nigerian music heavyweights, 2Baba, and Timaya.
In a recent interview with Adesope Live in London, the ‘Oliver Twist’ hitmaker reflected on the explosive global rise of Afrobeats, celebrating how far the genre has come since its early 2000s roots in West Africa.
Speaking on the evolving legacy of Afrobeats, D’banj emphasized the crucial role of the African diaspora in elevating the genre beyond the continent.
“Now everybody is Afrobeats, everybody is African. But I remember when, in this London, it wasn’t that great to say you were Nigerian. We all wanted to be Jamaicans. Now there’s no UK movie without Afrobeats in the soundtrack. Kudos not just to the creatives, but to the whole community,” he said.
D’banj also shared personal insights into conversations he’s had with his longtime peers, revealing the momentum behind the upcoming collaborative tour.
“I was speaking with Timaya the other day and he said, ‘Banger, you’ve done enough entrepreneurship. It’s time to come out,’”
“2Face told me the same thing—‘Let’s go on tour together.’ We have great bodies of work, and with how big the industry is now, there’s a market for all of us,” D’banj recounted.
In addition to the tour, D’banj announced that he and 2Baba will be releasing a new single titled “Feeling Good”, hinting that the track might also serve as the theme for the tour.
“For those who have waited, I want to thank you,” he said. “Looking back 20 years, it’s been an incredible journey. That might be the tour’s tag—just to say thank you.”
The announcement has sparked excitement among fans, as the trio are widely credited with shaping the early sound of Afrobeats and inspiring a new generation of African artists.
