
A fatal accident occurred on Sunday evening in front of the Eid Ground area of Oke Alaafia, Atikori, Ijebu-Igbo, claiming the life of a man identified as Segun and unidentified man, Several others were left critically injured.
Eyewitnesses report that the crash was caused by a head-on collision between two motorcycles (Okadas), as the riders tried to swerve and avoid deep potholes along the poorly maintained road. Segun, who was on a bike with his brother, died instantly at the scene, while his younger sibling passed away later at the hospital due to severe injuries.
In a heartbreaking twist, Segun was reportedly on his way to carry the baby items for his wife, who was in labour at the time of the accident.
Sadly, he passed away before reaching his destination. His wife later gave birth to a set of twins, casting a bittersweet shadow over an already tragic event.
Segun — a father of twins, the second fatality was the rider of the other motorcycle involved in the collision also lost his life in the accident. Their bodies have since been deposited in the mortuary.
Residents of Oke Alaafia and the wider Atikori community have expressed anger and frustration over the poor condition of the road, blaming the government’s neglect for repeated accidents in the area.
“This tragedy could have been avoided. These potholes have claimed lives before, and nothing has been done,” one resident said.
The community is now urgently calling on local and state authorities to fix the hazardous road before more lives are lost.
