In a significant gesture to honour the legacy of former President Muhammadu Buhari, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced on Thursday that the University of Maiduguri in Borno State will be renamed Muhammadu Buhari University.
The announcement was made during a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held at the State House in Abuja to pay tribute to Buhari, who passed away on July 13, 2025, in a London hospital.
The renaming of the university, one of Nigeria’s prominent federal institutions, reflects the Tinubu administration’s recognition of Buhari’s contributions to the nation as a military leader from 1984 to 1985 and as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.
The special FEC session, attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, cabinet ministers, National Assembly leaders, judiciary representatives, and members of Buhari’s family, served as a platform to commemorate his decades-long service to Nigeria.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, shared the news via his official X account, stating, “President Tinubu renames University of Maiduguri as MUHAMMADU Buhari University. President Tinubu announced the honour at the session of tributes of the Federal Executive Council to his late predecessor.”
The decision underscores Buhari’s enduring impact on Nigeria’s political, military, and socio-economic landscape, particularly his efforts to promote discipline, combat corruption, and foster national unity.
The renaming follows a series of national mourning activities, including a state funeral in Daura, Katsina State, and a seven-day period of lowered national flags, as directed by President Tinubu.
The gesture adds to the tributes honoring Buhari, who was celebrated for his integrity and commitment to Nigeria’s progress.
The University of Maiduguri, now Muhammadu Buhari University, is expected to carry forward his legacy as a symbol of educational excellence and national pride.
