Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy Begins Five-Year Jail Term Over Libyan Funding Scandal

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has begun serving a five-year prison sentence in Paris after being convicted of criminal conspiracy in connection with illicit campaign funding from the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Sarkozy, who led France from 2007 to 2012, becomes the first former head of an EU nation to be imprisoned and the first French leader since World War II to serve time behind bars.
