South West Nigeria – The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), South West Zone, has praised Oluomo of Ijebu Igbo, Alhaji Chief Lawal Ismail Olawale Abinugbola, also known as Oluomo of Ijebu Igbo, for speaking out against alleged extortion and harassment by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Topon Police Station and some other officers.
In a statement signed by the Secretary General of NAPS South West, Comrade Mubarak Olatunde Musbau, the association expressed strong support for Abinugbola’s efforts to stop what it described as the unfair treatment of students in the area. According to NAPS, repeated stop-and-search operations and alleged extortion have made many students feel unsafe and targeted.
The student body described the situation as a serious abuse of power and said such actions go against the duty of the police to protect citizens. NAPS added that the reported incidents have caused fear among students and affected their studies and peace of mind.
NAPS also highlighted Abinugbola’s background as a former Student Union Government (SUG) President and a respected community leader. The association noted that he is a businessman whose investments have created jobs and supported the local economy. They described his action as a sign of responsible leadership and courage.
The association encouraged him to remain firm in his stand against injustice and assured him of their continued support. NAPS said his efforts give hope to students who want to learn in a safe and peaceful environment.
NAPS further advised students in the region to remain calm, law-abiding, and responsible. The association urged students to report any case of harassment or extortion to the proper authorities and student leaders. It also called for unity among students to protect their rights through peaceful means.
Finally, NAPS called on government authorities, community leaders, and police authorities to properly investigate the allegations and take necessary action. The association stressed the need to hold any officer found guilty accountable and to rebuild trust between the police and the public.
NAPS South West reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of polytechnic students and promised to continue working with relevant stakeholders to ensure a safe and fair learning environment for all.
