Tragedy struck the Ahoro-Esinele community in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State as heavily armed gunmen launched a violent morning attack on Community High School and LA School.
One male teacher was tragically shot and killed on the spot while bravely trying to protect his students from the attackers.
The school principal, Mrs. Rachael Alamu, was forced into her car and abducted alongside an unverified number of students.
The gunmen reportedly fled with the victims toward a nearby bordering forest reserve.
The Oyo State Police Command and OYOSUBEB have confirmed the incident. Tactical units and local hunters are currently deployed to the area for search-and-rescue operations.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the slain teacher, the abducted victims, and the entire community during this painful and difficult time.
This is what happens when communities leave security entirely in the hands of the government. Beyond depending on authorities alone, parents and local communities must also become more vigilant and proactive in protecting their environment.
Waiting endlessly for the government to solve every security challenge may not be enough, community protection and collective responsibility are also important.
