IJEBU IGBO, Ogun State – The Ijebu North Local Government has assured residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property following the flash flooding that affected several communities in the Ijebu Igbo axis after heavy rainfall on Monday morning.
In an official statement, the council said it had received reports of flooding in communities including Lepete, Ojowo Road, Egbe-Subair, Odobotu, Igbairẹ and other adjoining areas. The local government expressed sympathy to residents and business owners whose homes, properties, and livelihoods were affected by the disaster.
According to the statement, the council is working closely with relevant emergency response agencies, community leaders, ward councillors and other stakeholders to assess the extent of the damage and coordinate immediate interventions.
The local government noted that the scale of the flash flooding is one of the most severe experienced in the affected communities in recent years, prompting swift action to safeguard residents.
As part of its emergency advisory, residents have been urged to avoid flooded roads, drainage channels and bridges with fast-flowing water. Those living in flood-prone areas have also been advised to relocate temporarily where necessary.
Parents and guardians were cautioned to keep children away from floodwaters, while residents were encouraged to report emergencies to the nearest security or emergency response agencies.
The council further advised residents to drink only safe water, boil or properly treat water from uncertain sources, maintain good personal and environmental hygiene and remain vigilant against cholera and other waterborne diseases that may arise from contaminated water sources.
Ijebu North Local Government also appealed to residents to refrain from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels, stressing that blocked waterways significantly contribute to flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.
The council reaffirmed its commitment to providing timely updates as assessments continue and assured the public that every effort is being made to minimize the impact of the flooding and support affected communities.
MarvelTvUpdates Newspaper and Media has reported numerous flooding incidents across various parts of Ijebu Igbo following the heavy rainfall.
