Woman Arrested for Allegedly Smuggling Colos-Laced Milo to Death Row Inmate at Ibara Prison

A woman, Mrs Iyabo Sowunmi, has been arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle a substance suspected to be cannabis into the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ibara, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Sowunmi was arrested at about 1:33 p.m. on Friday, August 28, 2026, during a routine security screening at the entrance of the correctional facility.
According to the Nigerian Correctional Service, Ogun State Command, the woman had come to visit an inmate identified as Dare Sowunmi, who is on death row.
During the screening, correctional officers reportedly found a sachet of Milo containing a substance suspected to be “colos”, a local name commonly used for cannabis mixed with other substances.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Odukoya Owolola Olayinka.
The command said the discovery showed the importance of the security checks carried out by its officers to prevent drugs, weapons and other prohibited items from being taken into correctional facilities.
Following her arrest, Sowunmi was handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Controller of Corrections in Ogun State, Abioye Kamoru Adesina, praised the officers who made the discovery for their alertness and professionalism.
Adesina also restated the Correctional Service’s zero-tolerance policy towards drugs and other criminal activities within its facilities.
He said correctional centres are meant to reform and rehabilitate inmates and must not be allowed to become places where illegal drugs are brought in or distributed.
The Ogun State Command warned members of the public against attempting to smuggle prohibited items into correctional facilities, stressing that anyone caught doing so would face the full consequences of the law.
