The Chief Imam of Ijebuland, Sheikh Muftaudeen Ayanbadejo, has reportedly introduced new regulations governing the appearance and conduct of worshippers attending Jumat prayers, including a ban on men with plaited hair and those wearing earrings.
The directive was reportedly announced during the Jumat congregation on Friday, October 9, 2026, as part of efforts to promote discipline, modesty and respect for the sanctity of the mosque.
Under the new regulations, men who plait their hair or wear earrings will not be allowed to enter the mosque for the weekly congregational prayers when the directive takes effect.
Sheikh Ayanbadejo reportedly stated that the new rules would be implemented from Friday, October 16, 2026, giving worshippers one week to familiarise themselves with the requirements and make the necessary adjustments.
Mobile Phone Use During Prayers Also Restricted
Beyond the restrictions on personal appearance, the Chief Imam also reportedly warned worshippers against using mobile phones during prayers.
According to the announcement, any worshipper caught operating a mobile phone while prayers are in progress risks having the device seized immediately.
The warning is aimed at discouraging distractions and encouraging worshippers to remain focused throughout the sacred congregational service.
New Directive Expected to Generate Reactions
The announcement is expected to generate conversations within the Muslim community, particularly concerning acceptable grooming practices, personal appearance and appropriate behaviour in places of worship.
While the directive emphasises discipline and reverence within the mosque, its implementation may also prompt discussions among worshippers about the standards expected of those attending Jumat prayers.
Worshippers have reportedly been given until Friday, October 16, to prepare for the enforcement of the new regulations.
The directives are scheduled to take effect on that date, according to the announcement attributed to the Chief Imam of Ijebuland.
