In anticipation of widespread protests against bad governance scheduled for August 1, numerous Nigerian political officeholders and their families are reportedly leaving the country or relocating to safer areas within Nigeria.
According to investigative journalist Jackson Ude, the exodus is driven by fears of potential attacks during the demonstrations
On his x(former Twitter) page, he wrote;
“AUGUST 1 PROTESTS: POLITICIANS LEAVING NIGERIA, SOME RELOCATING TO ABUJA For fear of being attacked, many Nigerian political office holders are now leaving Nigeria with their family members, according to my findings at the International Airports in Abuja and Lagos.
Some Ministers, Senators, House of Representatives, and other top aides of the President have either left or had their family members leave the country to escape possible attacks.
“According to findings, Niger, Egypt, London, U.S are some of the countries politicians and their families are running to.
While some other Northern Politicians especially those from Kano and Kaduna are heading to Abuja where it is considered safer.
A coalition of patriotic Nigerians and civil society groups had threatened a global protest against bad governance.
“The protests holding across the country and some part of the world starting from August 1, has been condemned by some who believe the current government needs more time to address the issue of poverty and unemployment facing the nation’s youth population.”
