The Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, narrowly avoided an attack by protesting student groups on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, in Abeokuta, the state capital.
According to a statement released by Mr. Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, the Deputy Governor’s convoy was en route to the 35 Artillery Brigade Alamala in Abeokuta to represent Governor Dapo Abiodun at the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day reception.
However, the convoy encountered a group of agitated students from Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), who were armed with sticks and other dangerous objects.
Attempts to negotiate passage for the convoy proved unsuccessful. Upon recognizing the Deputy Governor, the students became more agitated and attempted to block the convoy’s movement.
Despite efforts by security operatives and police officers to calm the situation, the students resorted to attacking the convoy, damaging vehicles and injuring security personnel.
To ensure safety and avoid further escalation, the convoy made an immediate detour to the Deputy Governor’s lodge. After the students dispersed, she proceeded to the event as planned.
The statement emphasized that contrary to reports circulating in the media, vehicular movement was obstructed, security vehicles were damaged, and several security officers sustained injuries while trying to maintain order.
