The Alaafin of Oyo-elect, Oba Akeem Owoade, has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the return of artefacts taken by the British in 1895.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, it was emphasized that “Oba Owoade would make sure that the artefacts taken away by the British in 1895 are brought back with some payments.”
This move follows Nigeria’s recent success in negotiating the return of Benin artefacts looted during the 1897 British expedition, which were repatriated and handed over to the Oba of Benin.
Recognizing the historical, spiritual, and cultural significance of these artefacts, Oba Owoade stressed that their return is vital for preserving the kingdom’s heritage and identity. He further revealed that he had secured the support of international organizations to aid in his mission, adding that they had also agreed to assist in the development of Oyo.
Beyond artefact recovery, the monarch outlined his broader vision for the kingdom. He vowed to tackle unemployment by providing vocational training for job-seeking graduates and empowering widows and widowers to improve their socioeconomic well-being. He also pledged to assist degree and Higher National Diploma holders in acquiring cybersecurity skills to curb the trend of youth seeking opportunities abroad.
Oba Owoade assured the people of Oyo that he would continue the legacy of his predecessor, the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, by promoting the kingdom’s culture, particularly through the enhancement of the Sango and Oranmiyan festivals.
“What is more, the development of health facilities has been my priority, and I want to be remembered for it during my reign,” he declared.
