The Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is set to launch the OMI EKO Project tomorrow, October 17, 2025, in a bold move to revolutionize water transportation across the state.
The project, which is being implemented by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) @talktolaswa, is supported with €410 million in funding under the Global Gateway Initiative, backed by the European Union, the French Development Agency, and the European Investment Bank.
Designed to make water travel safer, faster, and more efficient, the OMI EKO Project will introduce a new fleet of 78 high-capacity electric ferries, each with capacities ranging between 50 and 200 passengers. It will also deliver modern terminals and floating jetties, including the upgrade of existing facilities and the construction of new ones.
In addition, extensive dredging and channel works will be carried out to open and stabilize about 140 kilometers across 15 key waterways routes. The project also includes the introduction of digital ticketing systems and smart terminals to ensure faster boarding and a smoother commuter experience.
With a strong emphasis on safety, regulation, and capacity building under LASWA’s supervision, the OMI EKO Project will be implemented in phases over the next six years.
The initiative marks a major step toward sustainable transport development in Lagos, aligning with the state government’s vision to ease traffic congestion, promote clean mobility, and enhance connectivity across the megacity.
