Nigerian rapper Olamide Adedeji has reacted to backlash that trailed him after naming Wizkid as the greatest Afrobeats singer after the late Fela Kuti.
Olamide, who spoke at York University, Toronto, Canada, credited Wizkid for his consistency, and for helping to push Afrobeats global.
Shortly after the YBNL boss’s remarks surfaced online, users on social media went wild, with some hailing Baddo for his honesty, while others disagreed, saying their faves deserved the crown.
Reacting to the backlash, Olamide said the industry is big and diverse, adding that one’s definition of greatness cannot satisfy everyone.
He added that admiration for one artist shouldn’t come at the expense of another.
He wrote, “Honestly this whole 3-way conversation is pretty much whatever. You can’t diminish anyone’s greatness whether they’re A-list, B-list or anything else. Feel free to believe what you want or support whoever you choose – there’s plenty of room in the sky for everyone.”
The “Kana” hotmaker said the biggest names in Afrobeats – Burna Boy, Davido and Wizkid – are not shallow-minded enough to get upset over one’s opinion, adding that their focus is on their craft.
“However one thing to remember is that Burna, David and Wiz aren’t narrow-minded enough to get offended by someone else’s opinion or perspective. That’s part of why they’re where they are today,” he wrote, urging fans to let different opinions coexist.
The debate remains hot on social media, with Wizkid FC celebrating, while Davido’s 30BG fans believe the singer deserves the crown.
Burna Boy’s fans also argued for the singer, saying his run speaks for itself.
