The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has paid glowing tribute to the late Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, describing him as a rare symbol of courage and humanity for saving 262 Christians during a violent attack in 2018.
In a statement on Saturday signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN said the Imam’s selfless actions at the height of the massacre demonstrated exceptional moral bravery and a deep commitment to the sanctity of human life, regardless of religious differences.
According to CAN, the Imam risked his own life to shield Christians who had fled for safety, choosing compassion over fear at a time of extreme danger.
The association noted that his actions transcended religious boundaries and stood as a powerful reminder that faith should unite rather than divide.
CAN stated that the intervention not only saved hundreds of lives but also strengthened interfaith relations and renewed hope for peaceful coexistence in Nigeria.
It described the late cleric as a bridge-builder whose actions reflected the true essence of religion.
The association recalled that in recognition of his exceptional service to humanity, Imam Abdullahi was honoured by CAN during its Sapphire Anniversary celebrations in 2021.
It added that while such honours may fade, his legacy of courage and selflessness would continue to inspire future generations.
CAN also called for sustained public recognition of the Imam’s sacrifice, including continued engagement with his family, to ensure that his story remains a source of inspiration for unity and mutual respect across the country.
The Christian body expressed its condolences to the family of the late Imam, his community, and all those affected by his passing, praying that his legacy would continue to promote peace and understanding in Nigeria
