Nigeria’s national electricity grid collapsed on Tuesday morning, plunging several parts of the country into darkness and marking the second system failure within five days.
Data obtained from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) showed that load allocation to the 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) dropped to zero megawatts (MW) as of 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
The grid collapses disrupted power supply nationwide, forcing homes, businesses and public institutions to rely on alternative energy sources.
As of the time of filing this report, electricity authorities had yet to issue an official statement explaining the cause of the latest collapse or indicating when supply would be fully restored.
Repeated grid failures have continued to raise concerns about the stability and resilience of Nigeria’s power infrastructure, with consumers and industry operators calling for urgent reforms to prevent recurring outages.
