The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has arrested 79 Nigerians who are listed among what it described as the “worst of the worst” criminal offenders slated for deportation under a renewed immigration crackdown.
According to DHS, the suspects face a range of serious criminal allegations, including sexual assault, fraud, manslaughter, cocaine smuggling, kidnapping, and robbery. Of the 79 Nigerians arrested, six are women.
In a statement, the agency said it was acting to fulfil President Donald Trump’s pledge to carry out mass deportations, beginning with individuals convicted of serious crimes.
“Starting with the worst of the worst, including the illegal aliens you see here,” the statement read.
The list referenced by DHS reportedly includes more than 1,000 convicted individuals from multiple countries, with 53 Liberians, 28 Kenyans, 18 Ghanaians, six South Africans, and five Burkinabés also named.
The arrests come amid intensified enforcement operations by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with officials reportedly conducting door-to-door raids in several cities.
Last week, reports emerged that the heightened crackdown had forced some Nigerian immigrants to stay off the streets out of fear of arrest.
Some immigrants were also said to have skipped work, while others reportedly began making arrangements for quiet, self-organised departures from the United States.
