A formal petition has been submitted to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) in Abuja over alleged misconduct by officers attached to the Ijebu-Igbo Police Division in Ogun State.
The petition, dated 19 January 2026, was written by Jurigate Consultants, legal representatives to Chief Abiodun Olawale Lawal Abinugbola, the Oluomo of Ijebu-Igbo and Agbesinga Adinni of Ijebu Land. It accuses the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Akolade Oladejo, the Head of Surveillance, Officer Samuel, Inspector Abegunde and Officer Teju of alleged abuse of power.
According to the petition, the officers are accused of conspiracy, forceful and unlawful entry, intimidation, harassment, assault, criminal trespass, extortion, and threats to life, as well as conduct capable of breaching public peace. The petition also alleges the illegal use of armed policemen and POS operators in carrying out these acts.
The complainant claims that residents, students, and business owners in Ijebu-Igbo who have reportedly lived peacefully in the community for years, have recently been subjected to fear and unrest due to what was described as incessant and unlawful police actions.
The document further alleges that heavily armed officers, acting on instructions from the DPO, have on several occasions invaded private premises, forcibly arrested residents, demanded payments, and detained individuals who allegedly failed to comply with financial demands.
The petition emphasizes that the affected community members have refrained from self-help and instead seek urgent intervention from the police authorities to restore peace, protect civil liberties, and uphold the rule of law.
The Inspector General of Police is urged to investigate the allegations thoroughly and take necessary disciplinary and corrective actions where appropriate.
As of the time of filing this report, the Ogun State Police Command has not publicly responded to the allegations.
