The Ogun State Government has announced a ban on graduation ceremonies for pupils in Nursery, Kindergarten and other non-terminal classes across both public and private schools in the state.
The directive was contained in a circular issued by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology through the Department of Private Schools, dated June 18, 2026.
The move, according to the government, is aimed at protecting parents and guardians from unnecessary financial burdens often associated with elaborate graduation celebrations.
Under the new guidelines, graduation ceremonies will only be permitted for learners in Primary Six, Junior Secondary School Three (JSS 3) and Senior Secondary School Three (SSS 3), who are completing recognized stages of their education.
The Ministry further directed that approved graduation ceremonies must be conducted in a modest manner and should not impose any financial cost on learners, parents or guardians.
As part of the measures, the use of canopies, Aso Ebi, customized attire and other forms of extravagant social displays during graduation ceremonies has been strictly prohibited.
The government emphasized that schools should prioritize academic recognition and character development rather than organizing elaborate social events that place financial pressure on families.
“All Proprietors, School Heads, and Administrators of public and private schools are hereby directed to ensure strict compliance with these provisions,” the circular stated.
The Ministry warned that any school found violating the directive would face sanctions in line with the regulations and guidelines governing school operations in Ogun State.
The circular was signed by A.A. Bisiriyu, Director of Education (Private Schools), on behalf of the Permanent Secretary.
The latest directive has sparked reactions among parents, educators and school proprietors, with many welcoming the decision as a step towards reducing the rising costs associated with end-of-session celebrations in schools.
