The Ogun, Lagos and Oyo State Governments have declared Thursday, August 20, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Isese Day celebration.
The declaration is aimed at promoting and preserving Yoruba culture, heritage and traditional values, while recognising the important role of traditional institutions and cultural practices in society.
In Ogun State, August 20 was formally declared a public holiday in 2023 following a resolution of the Ogun State House of Assembly and the approval of Governor Dapo Abiodun.
According to the Ogun State Government, Isese Day provides an opportunity for adherents of the Yoruba traditional religion to honour their ancestors, observe traditional rites and promote the values and teachings embedded in their spiritual and cultural practices.
The government noted that the annual celebration also strengthens the sense of community among practitioners and provides an opportunity for members of the wider society to appreciate and respect the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people.
It further stated that the observance of Isese Day reflects the administration’s recognition of the role of culture and traditional institutions in preserving the identity of the people and strengthening social cohesion.
The governments urged residents to celebrate the occasion peacefully and responsibly, while respecting the beliefs, rights and practices of others.
The 2026 Isese Day celebration is expected to feature various traditional and cultural activities as Yoruba communities across the states come together to celebrate their heritage and values.
