At least 20 athletes from the Kano State contingent have lost their lives in a fatal road accident at Dakatsalle Bridge in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday as the athletes were returning from the recently concluded National Sports Festival held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Umar Fagge, who confirmed the incident, said the accident involved a bus conveying 30 athletes, which reportedly veered off the bridge and plunged into a ditch.
“As I am speaking to you now, we have counted 19 dead bodies,” Fagge told reporters, adding that several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Ado Salisu, a former Vice President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), also confirmed the incident, noting that victims were being rushed to Kura General Hospital for medical attention.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kano Sector Command, Abdullahi Labaran, acknowledged the accident but said details were still sketchy.
“We just received the report of the crash, so I cannot confirm the exact number of casualties at the moment,” he said.
Authorities have yet to release the official cause of the accident as investigations continue.
